My Declaration:

I am so happy and grateful to be in the healthiest relationship I’ve ever been in and it feels a bit surreal at times

I can feel in my gut how much in love I am so much that it almost hurts

I am so connected to my partner that it brings me peace. We just “get” each other.

I feel fortunate to be with a partner who’s willing to do whatever it takes to grow this relationship even in times of conflicts. We have each other’s back and best interest at heart.

When I say those words, do they resonate with you? Because if you they do, let me ask you something:…

Social media has increasingly become a way to look for various opportunities, connect with others and even search tool for romance.

When the Generation Y is still trying to wrap their heads around social media, Generation Z is living, breathing social media. I say this because I see how second nature the use of social media is for my younger generation Z sisters.

So which social media platforms are appropriate for conducting a romantic search, where can you display your relationship status and what demographics each platform reflects? Let’s take a look at Linkedin, Twitter and Facebook.

Linkedin is similar to a business networking environment. Obviously maintaining a certain level of professionalism is required here. Professionals on Linkedin usually seek job opportunities, partnerships or to promote themselves and what they’re selling.

Twitter is more of the cocktail mixer. It’s a great place to reconnect with friends, mingle with interesting people you would never meet otherwise. It can be environment more open to igniting romantic connections though some might also be there for business purposes.

Facebook is pretty much like high school or university. Here, you’ll find the popular and not so popular “kids” and it’s easy to ask your friends insider information about the person you have a crush on. They’ll tell you if you should follow through with your intentions or stay clear of your romantic interest.

So more than ever, individuals have the ability to conduct their own dating searches and find their “one”. That’s why I suspect that the number of couples who first connected over a social media platform will grow in the future. The good thing about using social media is the fact that it helps minimize the frustration experienced through online dating. It does so by making it easier to learn about who you are getting acquainted with.

The benefit social media offers over online dating sites is the luxury of seeing people in “context”. A “context” where one can get a general sense of who a romantic interest is through their public profile. Hobbies, educational level, profession, mutual friends, topics of interests and even the way they engage others are out there for public viewing.

An increasing number of people are connecting via social media and appropriate platforms should seriously be considered as an additional romantic search tool. And if you are wondering who uses which platforms, check out these social media demographic statistics.

Since Twitter is, among other things, a communication tool, those on twitter comfortable enough to share their status can do so by simply displaying it. You are this way inviting other singles to connect with you. After all, most of us do share our status on Facebook so why not on Twitter, the “social media cocktail mixer”?

For those wondering how it can be done, I’ve decided to create a basic way to showcase a relationship status with the list that follows. An example can be S:S (“Status: Single”). So here it is:

S:S (Single)

S:R for (In a relationship)

S:E (Engaged)

S:M (Married)

S:OR for (In an open relationship)

S:D (Divorced)

S:W (Widowed)

S:C (Complicated)

So update your Twitter status and of course… Please RT.

What are your thoughts? Can social media yield better results than online dating sites when searching for love?

There’s a movie about the way “texting” or “BBMing” is affecting dating and relationships in this new age of romance. The movie, called Textuality, naturally caught my attention in the paper since it is opening today in select Vancouver theaters.

I think this movie is coming out at a right time since text messaging when dating is a more common occurrence these days. I don’t know about you, but I’ve heard my fair share of relationships that’ve gone sideways over a full on conversation that took place over texting. The worse is when the two individuals won’t pick up the phone to actually talk and sort things out.

The thing about texting is that it is a double-edge sword when it comes to dating and building relationships. It’s as much the relationship killer as it can help solidify a relationship.

It can be the relationship killer since early dating stages are about assessing and building an emotional connection. For this to take place, one needs to use all senses to make an informed decision about the person they’re getting to know. Unfortunately, when texting, the emotions, the feel of the conversation are missing, this can easily lead to misunderstandings. Misunderstanding that can mushroom into bigger issues that can kill any chances of success a relationship originally had.

On the other hand, it can help strengthen the bond between partners because once the couple has gotten to know each other well enough, they can effectively communicate throughout the day (read workday). At this point, texting becomes a more effective tool once the couple has developed their own way to convey flirtatiousness, subtly (or not) remind the other person know they are thinking of them and develop their own inside jokes.

As a side not:

When in doubt regarding how a message will be interpreted, avoid texting.

If a misunderstanding occurs, the rule of thumb should be to pick up the phone as soon as possible.

Consider this. According to experts, 7% of our communication is verbal with roughly 20% comprised of tone of voice, the rest is more or less body language… and we still don’t “get” each other sometimes. So imagine how the chances of not “getting” each other skyrocket when we only rely on texting.

Texting should be considered an add-on to day-to-day conversations so use it wisely. Not the other way around.

Now I have a question for you. How do you think texting or BBMing is affecting dating and relationships today?

To love & happiness,

“Please help I’m confused ! Been seeing my fella for 7 months he lives an hour away and works long hard hours so only get to see him usually at the weekend, he moved back to his parents also so privacy is difficult we rely on text rather than calls, he says he loves coming to see me and he is very comfy with me, I have the tendency to get mad when he lets me down though – usually through work (he has to work overtime so cancels).

Last time he did this I said I hope you are not fobbing me off – it was said in the heat of the moment and I was just frustrated because I was so looking forward to seeing him. I have said sorry and he said he was shocked I said that I explained why and he’s fine but I am worried I have spoiled things. The last few weeks he hasn’t texted me as much as he used to, in fact I give in and text first and he always replies straight away and says sorry just hectic at work but he used to text me before and after work.

I’m worried he’s just not into me as much as I am into him. Do I ask him how he feels as he never shows his feelings to me ? Do I expect too much ? We do text most days but he can go 2/3 days sometimes without texting me then I start to panick and give in and text him.”

Thank you for your question via “Ask Mick” Vicky,

I can see why you feel confused considering he doesn’t communicate as much as he should with you. It also doesn’t help that he “never shows his feelings”.

By the sound of it, you are a couple since you called him your “fella”. Considering you two have a long distance relationship, it’s even more important to hear each other’s voices as much as possible. As convenient as texting is, it doesn’t replace hearing a voice, tonality and nuances when delivering a message. All these missing elements can negatively affect a relationship because it leaves room for misunderstandings, which in turn can quickly mushroom into bigger problems if not quickly cleared over the phone or in person.

So as a couple, plan to have a chat. Even a busy person such as your fella can find 10 minutes during the day to touch base with you. So my recommendation is to:

Ask him his thought on better ways to stay connected during the day despite his long working hours.

Ask him why he thinks things aren’t the way they used to be.

Share with him how texting makes you feel as well as him not communicating with you as much as he used to.

See what he says.

His answers should reveal his thoughts about you and the relationship.

Asking those questions is not expecting too much but rather, fairly asking important question about the relationship because you care about the relationship. So go ahead and let us know what happens.

I hope this helps.

Your comments are welcome.

To love & happiness,

After finalizing the details of my appearance at the Malene Grotrian Studio with Jenna Fortin, Business Partner at Malene Grotrian Design, I was looking forward to speak about “How to better manage demanding careers and relationships” at their Thursday Style Soiree. For those who don’t know, the Style Soiree is an intimate evening of tips and fashion with Malene, founder and designer.

With the 10 to 15 women attending the event, the intimate setting was perfect to make my presentation a very interactive one. Laughs and questions from the attentive crowd of professional women punctuated the presentation until it came to an end.

Being at the Studio was a pleasure considering I had a chance to learn more about Malene’s designing philosophy. A philosophy you can familiarize yourself with here.

Once Malene shared with us the stories of her happy clients, I found myself among her repeat clientele, as well as new ones, indulging in her designs. Designs that gave me gift ideas… so I think I’ll definitely be back at the Studio.

Thank you Malene and Jenna for inviting me to speak at your Soiree.

You can see more pictures on our Facebook Fan Page. Before ending this I want to send a big thank you to Arlana (my fiancée) who took great pictures that night.

To love & happiness,

I went out on a date with this guy and it went really well. He said we would make plans sometime this week, but I haven’t heard from him yet. Should I call him or text him and ask what’s up or should I leave it? It’s been two days and nothing!”

In cases like these, why not wait a week and see what happens. If he said you would make plans, he was in fact telling you that he would call you to make plans. As such, you should see if he’s going to follow through.
By giving him a week to contact you, you are in fact:

Determining if he’s a man of his word

Seeing if he is interested in you and wants to pursue you

Setting the right relationship pattern at the start of the relationship by allowing him to pursue you and lead

If you feel that you should phone or text, you can but I wouldn’t recommend it.

I wouldn’t for the simple fact that if you start initiating and not giving him room to lead, this pattern may perpetuate should the relationship develops in something more serious. The last thing we want is for you to feel like “you do everything” down the road. Additionally, you could run the risk of driving him away because he could interpret your reaching out to him as a sign of neediness and insecurity.

At this stage, I recommend showing your best self, one of a confident and secure woman who understands that to know what type of man she’s dealing with, she needs to allow him to pursue her. Not the other way around. If he doesn’t, maybe considering other candidates is something to think about.

So Miss X, I advise showing some patience and see if he’ll follow through.

I hope this helps.

To love & happiness,

Mick
